In the ancient, nature-based healing science of Ayurveda, Autumn is known as Vata season, a time when the mobile qualities of air and space dominate.
In the Midwest in particular, we feel this as an increase in the wind element, changeability in the weather, and, internally, as a sense of restlessness or anxiety. That said, this is an important time of year to calm, ground, and nurture the body, mind, and spirit.
Students receive a brief introduction to Ayurveda and the three doshas with Alex McKeone. We then turn our focus to simple practices that can be easily incorporated into a daily routine to establish and maintain steadiness and ease during this seasonal transition.
We also discuss supportive foods and eating mindset to nurture healthy digestion as we move from the heat and intensity of summer to a season that is cold, dry, light, and mobile in nature. We end with a simple, Vata balancing asana and meditation practice to anchor us in our root, and calm and stabilize the mind.
